Happy Birthday, Mama Bird!

Wednesday, November 4, 2009 was the 100th birthday for Evelyn Bryan Johnson, aka Mama Bird.

Long a local folk heroine, she has recently gotten national attention, For a nice write-up, visit the AOPA ePilot article: Tennessee Aviation Legend turns 100. Local TV station WBIR has a very nice story linked here.

Dog is My Copilot

[With apologies to Generals Scott and Chennault]

Since 1903, airplanes have been used for many things, from saving lives, to mass destruction, in the name of some cause or other. Still, the primary objective of aviation is to get payload from here to there, and if the payload is Man's Best Friend (or even, say, a cat), the world is a better place.

That's the mission of Pilots and Paws, a Non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose objective is to take innocent animals from where they are not wanted, to a place where they can be appreciated, and not the "farm".

Please visit pilotsnpaws.org to learn more about using your airplane to help this organization's mission to give Fido and fighting chance at a decent life.

July 11, 2009 Young Eagles event at DKX for the relatives of Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA)

“Thank you to the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority, the EAA, and David Yates, my pilot, for the thrilling experience to participate in the Young Eagles Program on Saturday, July 11 at Knoxville Downtown Island Airport. I never had flown in an airplane so I really appreciate
this amazing once in a lifetime opportunity.
The airplane ride only lasted about 20 minutes but it was still incredible. I loved every minute to see Knoxville from up above.
I want to especially thank the pilots for donating their time and airplanes to make this program available.”
Caleb Edmonds

B-17 Repositioning Flight October 16
Chapter 17 - Keeping Tennessee skies free from the Huns
!

New book features Evelyn Bryan Johnson, and local pilot Sandy Sowders Mercandetti

from Prez. Jim Roberts
Fellow flight enthusiasts: I've just enjoyed a copy of "A Hunger For The Sky," written by a lady pilot who is a frequent contributor to "Vintage Airplane," the publication of EAA's Vintage Aircraft Division. Following is a description of the book.

A Hunger for the Sky is a collection of women pilot biographies, authored by Sparky Barnes Sargent and published by DGA Enterprises, Inc. The book features the personal stories of nine women who are irresistibly drawn to the sky.
These women range in age from 98 to 28, and they include a professional skywriter, airline first officer, DC-3 captain, Guinness World Record holder, and owners/operators of a gliderport and an aerobatic school.

Each chapter is devoted to one woman; the reader will have the rare opportunity to learn who these women were as young girls, follow them into adulthood, learn about their attraction to aviation, and discover the ensuing “skyways” they have chosen.
For more information, or to order a copy, go to home.windstream.net/av8terz/book.html

Another Chapter 17 Success!

From Ken Carpenter

Finally flew last week. No major problems. It flies hands off straight as an arrow running smooth. Our prop may be a little flat since it will turn up 2400 RPM in climb. It is 57 pitch. We are flying with fake English registration G-ATDK and US N # 80660. The TDK stands for Tom, Dale and Ken.

Helpful EAA Videos Online

HINTS FOR HOMEBUILDERS' VIDEOS NOW ONLINE

In keeping with EAA's efforts to offer knowledge and information in the most user-friendly and readily available ways, EAA has created Hints for Homebuilders, a series of short videos that are now available online. Subjects for these initial videos were selected and developed by EAA staff and member volunteers.

"EAA has always been about sharing knowledge among members, and these new video tips are just another way of doing that, taking advantage of the opportunities the Internet provides," said Charlie Becker, director of EAA's member programs. "We're hoping to develop an entire catalog of tips, tricks, and alternative methods that will be valuable to EAA members."

A new media outlet for aviation takes flight:

Milford Shirley, president of Chapter 193 in Jacksonville, Florida and fellow EAAer Brian Kraut have started Flight Time Radio which airs Saturdays at 9 am on AM 1320 WBOB. You can listen over the web by going to www.flighttimeradio.com. Live and archive shows.

Chapter 17 welcomes a new Aviation database. Check out what is available at FunPlacesToFly.com for a whole bunch of interesting stuff.

Jim Smith is the webmaster for Chapter 1246 in McKinney Texas (North of Dallas), but he has created a fun and powerful website for aviators everywhere.

The Western North Carolina Air Museum is just the place to soak up aviation history and enjoy viewing some classic aircraft. Plus, it's close to downtown Hendersonville,  a great place to shop and enjoy some first class restaurants.
